Bury the Bride Review

When a movie chooses to reveal its twist is always an interesting proposition.  Most do so near the end of the story…to shock you and change your understanding of what you have been watching.  Alfred Hitchcock used perhaps the most famous scene in film history to change the entire purpose of Psycho much earlier.  The two Orphan films have done it both ways.   The original reveals something near the end…Orphan: First Kill, halfway through.  Last year, The Invitation revealed what kind of movie we were watching to set up its third act.  Bury the Bride doesn’t wait as long as any of those examples.  The twist in the story comes at the end of Act 1.  And it makes the movie a lot of fun.

June (Scout Taylor-Compton) is getting married…much to the chagrin of sister Sadie (Krsy Fox) and friends.  Questions and doubts surrounding her quickie engagement threated to overwhelm the group’s bachelorette party weekend.  When June’s fiancé David (Dylan Rourke) and his redneck buddies show up to the party unannounced…all hell threatens to break loose.  And then it does.

Bury the Bride is going to be difficult to discuss without talking about that early story twist.  Most of the movie comes after the reveal…but the reveal itself is so fun that we won’t ruin it here.  We’ll talk around it as best as we can to explain why this Tubi original is worth clicking on.

The biggest thing to be said about Bury the Bride is that everything about it feels better than it needs to be.  This is a small budget movie with an exciting idea at its center.  The acting is a little better than similar scoped horror films.  The script gives us more realistic characters and arguments than you expect.    There’s a bigger emotional payoff than you’d think.  The direction is more confident and the vision a little sharper.  There’s a sense of fun here that can’t be drowned out by what the movie doesn’t have the budget to do.

All the above combines with that fun story swerve to deliver a fun watch and a good movie.  If you like some fun with your horror…Bury the Bride has you covered.  It doesn’t take long to get to the real story…but it takes long enough to have some fun trying to decipher what the problem is going to be.  Are the stereotypical rednecks a real danger to the girls…or are we projecting that onto them?  Is something else out there coming to attack all of them?  When David and his friends say they’re leaving to hunt something on the perimeter…what kind of beast might be out there?

I didn’t see the twist coming.  In retrospect there were a couple clever clues that I missed before it came.  The moment it’s revealed is very fun and fuels the rest of the story with an energy that sustains a good pace.  I was, at times, confused about some of the rules of the world we find ourselves in.  There’s no problem with a movie carving out its own lore to play with…but when you aren’t told what that lore is some of the playtime is wasted questioning how it works.  I recognize this can’t possibly make sense until you watch Bury the Bride…and I apologize for that.  But, like those hidden clues in act 1, you’ll get it in retrospect.

Bury the Bride is an easy movie to recommend watching.  First, it’s streaming for free on Tubi.  If your Tubi Original history only goes as far as the Terror Train series…refer to the paragraph about everything in this movie being better than you expect it to be.  Second, it’s a tight 90 minute or so runtime.  Not a lot of fat finds its way into the story…some set-up, a twist…fun times for all.  Most importantly, Bury the Bride is just a good movie.  At times it takes an unexpected turn…more often it’s doing a good job doing the things we want our horror movies to do.

With solid performances, a clever twist and some well-paced fun, Bury the Bride is a Tubi Original worth firing up the app for.  You’ll know by the 30-minute mark if it’s the kind of movie that’s for you or not.  If it is…I found the hour that followed to be well worth the investment of time.  A few laughs…a bit of gore…some unexpected moments and some unexpected heart.  You may have some questions while watching it unfold…but it asks a more interesting question by the time the credits roll.

Scare Value

Bury the Bride is a fun movie. It can be a tad head-scratching at times…especially when the secret of the story is revealed. Although you are never fully certain what kind of rules the movie is playing by…you can rest assured that the main goal is to have a fun time. That goal is accomplished in some fun and exciting ways.
